Evil - 3 Stars

Discussing Ep. 1.3

I liked this episode. I thought it was a real improvement over first two, getting much creepier and blurring the lines between the rational and the supernatural while adding a mystery element to it all.

It was great how they introduced the six types of demonic possession. What makes them interesting, especially diabolical oppression (where you seem to be bombarded by tragedy after tragedy in quick succession) and diabolical obsession (exhibiting bizarre behaviour) is that these types of possession are far, far more difficult to prove. The irony of the first one is that people will chalk up such tragedies to a string of "bad luck," which is a no more scientific explanation than demonic possession! The second one is difficult to separate from psychological problems, which was a perfect set up for Kristen to show her stuff. I thought they did well by having her being able to label that Broadway producer, Byron Duke, as possessing narcissistic personality disorder, as well as her being able to give insight into popular leadership/self help programs such as the 53 Rules of Dominance. Also, they way they explained Duke sweating blood as being nothing more than his hair transplant getting infected and making him bleed was rather funny. What was also funny was how at the end, when everything seemed alright and Duke seemed like he was becoming a good guy, he gets a message that causes him to jump to his death! I thought that was both unexpected and brilliant!

Seems like these devices were the star of the episode. I NEVER liked these things! It's like the beginnings of Skynet or something. The fact that it's alleged that these devices are actually spying on their users, collecting information for the government or perhaps becoming sentient on their own is creepy enough. This episode upped the creepy factor with these devices by adding a paranormal element to them. Once again, they went the route of presenting what seems to be a supernatural occurrence to be explained away with non-supernatural explanation, only to have those non-supernatural explanations be insufficient in the end.

I loved how Ben went about exploring every possible option, from the hacker using the wi-fi to using the cellular signal and how he was able to affect even the temperature in the room via the cellular signal. Of course, what creeped Ben, his sister and me out was when another "hacker" is able to use his father's device and starts talking to his sister in, I'm assuming, Punjabi and talks about a baby. The mystery is set up there in regard to what baby he was talking about and who, or what, that "hacker" was. Because while the real hacker owned up to pranking Duke, there was no explanation for this. Of course, it could be an elite hacker using software that Ben and his sister have never heard of, but it seems like Ben and his sister are up on the latest technology so it's a real mystery who or what was talking to them. When the Alexa device started laughing, that freaked me out. I've heard of devices doing that and this show made me NOT want to buy one all the more!

The other mystery, of course, is in regard to David's dream and what that entails. First off, I want to address what that priest told him about demon's vulnerabilities being revealed in numbers and symbols. That's the first I've ever heard of such a thing and it sounded stupid. But the other line that really got me was when he said that "God draws in straight lines, while the devil draws in puzzles and anagrams." I had to agree with Townsend....that made no sense. One need only look to the parables of Jesus to realize that God does indeed use puzzles and non-direct language to reveal truths. The Bible is FULL of that. So I thought that was a really stupid thing for that priest to say because it completely flies in the face of what the Bible and other religious texts teach about God.

There was almost a DaVinci's Code feel to David trying to figure out his visions. It was a tad bit too easy though, having those Roman numerals on that tomb be latitude and longitude coordinates that David could superimpose on a map. That was a bit much. But I am interested in finding out what it all means and if it indeed is a message from God. The answers seemingly lie in Chicago, New York and Washington.

The spark between Kristen and David was downplayed a little, though it was a bit out of place when she asked how David could think of joining the Church amidst all the scandal and abuses at the hands of the Church. I liked his answer though, that the Church obviously needs good people to counteract all the bad that's been done in its name.

Speaking of Kristen, I think she gone and fucked up! So while I'm not a fan of how they're developing Townsend as essentially being the Devil himself, or at the very least a demonic personality, so blatantly....what's done is done and they might as well run with it now. And run with it they are! I did like Townsend's rationale for wanting that 14 year old kid in prison, claiming how it will corrupt him to the point where he becomes less innocent and more susceptible to becoming a monster, possibly a sociopath. That "second prison rape" line was chilling! And I loved how Kristen tried to record him talking but her recording got all fucked up in key places where Townsend talked.

Where I believe Kristen herself fucked up was in trying to play fire with fire with this guy. Creating a deepfake conversation and trying to pass it off as genuine....I think that's going to bite her in the ass in the future. I'm going to assume that a message this show is going to get across is that you cannot defeat the Devil with lies. Like the Bible says, the Devil is the father of lies. While Kristen may have won this one battle, she will lose the war by applying these kinds of tactics. She is in over her head and I kept shaking my head at the fact that she used a blatant deepfake as evidence. If they revisit this story in the next episode, I could see Townsend somehow revealing the recording as a deepfake, destroying Kristen's credibility and even casting doubt in David's mind about Kristen's morality, though it would be somewhat hypocritical if he judges her when he has his own secrets.

Overall, this was a great episode. I'm getting more involved in these characters and where this is all going to go!

Legacies - I'll Never Give Up Hope

Discussing Ep. 2.1

- I like the new logo without the colourful fireworks. This one works better!

- Aunt Bonnie! I hate how they tease TVD alumni!

- So Lizzie is hanging out with Caroline in Europe? Again, another tease.

- Alaric looks good with a beard. Looks more distinguished!

- This is really what has always gotten me about TVD universe vampires.....there's nothing 'vampire' about them other than their fangs and eyes and super powers. They get to walk around in the sunlight like normal people and it's off-putting. Seeing Kaleb and MG just hang around on a sunny afternoon, having BBQ is so not-vampire-like.

- I'm curious to know if there is any significance to having that "Jesus Saves" sign in the shot with MG and Kaleb.

- Why is Landon cooking the meat? Raf is a wolf....they don't need the meat to be cooked!

- Damn it, I was hoping it would be Klaus who rescued Hope.

- Clarke is coming off like some creepy dude at a club trying to pick up Hope! It's almost funny.

- I'm curious to know....if the world has completely forgotten Hope....then why has nothing in the world changed? We saw in Lizzie's alternate universe experience what happened when Hope never existed. So why is the world still the same?

- Oh, I really hope that with talk of the Ascendant, they will bring Kai back! That would be awesome!

- Josie is looking older for some reason. More so than any of the other characters, with the exception of maybe MG.

- "You talkin' to your meat?" That sounds really dirty if taken the wrong way! LOL!

- I'd be really curious to know what Landon is doing by re-killing himself a la Mafia style!

- I would be SO impressed if that vortex in Malivore was the same one that was sucking up people when the Other Side was collapsing. I know it isn't but that would be really cool if it was!

- Josie and Landon? Lasie? Jondon? Either way, it could work though it will really fuck things up with Hope!

- Ohhhh!!! "Solid second place!" That's cold shit right there!

- That's rubbish. Josie cheating at chess? Rubbish!

- LOL! Breaking the fourth wall! "You're a montage!"

- I'll give credit....those are some freaky looking monsters!

- I hope that's not the end of Clarke. He has potential to be a great villain.

- It's an interesting point Josie makes about a phoenix quota.....there is no telling how many times Landon can come back to life.

- FUCKIN' A!!!! Are they going to bring Kai back?!? I hope so! DAMN, I HOPE SO!!!

- Wow! So the memories of Hope don't come back with her return. This is going to be interesting.

- Awwww! I felt bad for Hope watching her watch Landon and Josie make out.

- Fucking hell....Hope SERIOUSLY needs to get in touch with Freya or Rebekah. Have a heart-to-heart about what's going on in her life. Have them walk her through this experience because she can't do it alone. Damn it....they need to bring back either Freya or Rebekah for this season!

- What the fuck is that monster supposed to be?!? He looks like the Hulk's meth-addicted little brother!

Normally, I would be upset at yet another Julie Plec love triangle. But this time, I'm not. This felt far, far more organic and plausible. Lasie seems to work despite them getting together in all of one episode, but they did it well. And in many ways, it seems almost like a love square...with Raf, Hope, Landon and Josie. They surprised me last season with the writing so I will trust they will handle this love square rather well.

Still, I am hoping for cameos from TVD/TO alumni. They can't go another season with these teases. They just can't. Bring in Freya. Bring in Kai. Bring in Caroline.

Bring in somebody, damn it!

Riverdale - In Memoriam

Discussing Ep. 4.1 - As per my usual routine, I'll comment on this episode as I go along. I'm sure it's going to be a sad one as it is the episode where they pay tribute to Luke Perry (Fred Andrews).

- It's amazing how something that gripped the town of Riverdale so completely is regarded as an "urban legend" only a couple of months later!

- Archie's hair seems unusually orange. Maybe it's the sunlight.

- Oh yeah, I forgot that Cheryl is crazy and entertaining her dead brother! He's actually looking pretty good for a 3 year old corpse!

- I'm going to have to remember Cheryl's attitude in this episode because it will no doubt change in the next episode where she's on everyone's side. That's the Cheryl Blossom way!

- I'm thinking that's actually an inside joke that Jug made about Archie surviving a bear attack.....because it's so fucking ridiculous that he did so with minimal damage! He is, after all....

- Yeah, Archie's hair is definitely looking different for some reason.

- Holy shit! An additional cost of $9,000?!? That's a complete funeral in and of itself....at least here in Canada!

- Reggie?!? So Reggie is back and he's all good with Ronnie and Archie together? The fuck?

- I'm sorry....I know this is supposed to be a special episode in tribute to Luke Perry.....but this is NOT how any of this is supposed to go. This scene right now of them all together, having a few beers and sharing stories of Fred Andrews should be stuff they're doing way AFTER the funeral! Having lost both my parents, I can tell you that you when the death of someone close hits you, you are completely and utterly numb to everything happening around you.....time slows down like nothing you've ever experienced before....a week feels like months.....and you're just going through the motions of getting everything ready because you can't process the loss. This scene looks like it should be something they're doing either at the reception or even at the wake.

I will point to Buffy once again, that episode where Buffy loses her mom. THAT episode exemplified what it was like to lose a parent. Dare I say, ironically enough....The Vampire Diaries got it right too! When Caroline loses her mom, Sheriff Liz, there is that scene where she's wandering through the house and it's all dark and quiet and she's ends up talking with Damon.....I'll give credit where credit is due and say that THAT scene caught that feeling of what it's like when you lose a parent. It's this sense of emptiness and silence that permeates everything around you because you can no longer feel a specific energy or life force that you've always experienced in your day-to-day. What they're doing now with this little get-together between all of them, I feel like they're trying too hard to make it all emotional.

- Are they going to make it that Archie becomes Stupid Archie again and does something stupid like try and hunt down his father's killer? Because that would just be stupid!

- Well, how fucking convenient that Reggie has a Hearst just lying around!

- AHA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!! Of all the things that they're going to use the "underage" card on, it's Archie transporting a dead body? With all the adult stuff these kids have gotten away with over the years, why do they even bother at this point?

- Shit! You could tell Mrs. Andrews went into 'Mom Mode' on that funeral director!

- I knew Shannon Doherty was going to make a cameo appearance. It's actually quite nice to see her, especially with everything going on in her life as well.

- Again, I hate harping on a scene like this but....seriously? Fred was boasting how great a son Archie was and how blessed he was to have a son like him to this random woman on the side of the road? They're trying too hard to make this all emotional and they don't have to!

- Wow! Cheryl changed her character in the span of one episode. She'll no doubt change in the next one.

- Actually, it's rather consistent that Archie is becoming Stupid Archie again. While I can understand him being angry and even wanting revenge, that's always been the case with Archie. He's doesn't run on logic, he runs on emotion.

- Fuck, ya know what....I'll applaud that!

The fact that Archie recognizes that he would have done the same as that kid did, that he could have been as reckless and as stupid as that kid was, with all of his misguided actions that were fuelled by emotion rather than reason.....I'm glad Archie recognizes that!

- Fred would be ashamed of Archie. I don't know what the fuck Ronnie is talking about how Fred would understand. Fred would have lectured Archie's ear off about how stupid it was to try and beat up some random stranger out of a sense of revenge!

- Oh, for fuck's sakes!

Why can't they ever do anything low-key in Riverdale? Why do they have to have a parade? Look, I get it! He was a beloved character. And sure, Riverdale is a small town and everyone knows everyone but for crying out loud, they better have a parade like this for every other citizen that dies in that town!

- Okay, where are all these town's people for the funeral?!?

- Nana Blossom!

- I'm glad they acknowledged Betty's emotional turmoil since her dad recently died too. And they didn't throw a parade for him!

- Wait....Alice Cooper? Isn't she supposed to be missing? Isn't she supposed to be with The Farm being an undercover FBI agent? The fuck is this bullshit?

- Damn, it was hard watching that footage of Luke Perry.

Overall, I have to say that it was a typical Riverdale episode. I was hoping for something more but they had to go into the realm of the ridiculous as they always do. I also believe that this episode was a few months too late. I get why they couldn't do it back when Luke Perry actually died, for a variety of reasons, but the shock of his death wore off and, for me at least, the impact of this episode is not as strong as a result.

Regardless, it was a nice send off for the Fred Andrews character. Luke Perry will be missed, not only on this show but in the real world as well. Rest in Peace, Luke Perry!
