Discussing Ep. 2.3
So my random thoughts on this episode.
It was a mixed bag. Some good, some not so good.
Right from the get-go, I didn't understand this yearly tradition of vandalizing the opposing school's property. That seemed random and a bit contrived as a means to introduce the new sheriff.
Speaking of which, there's a new sheriff in town.....like literally!
And all we got from her was that Matt Donovan was no longer there and she had some big shoes to fill. What big shoes? It was funny how she was talking about the legendary Sheriff Donovan and all she heard was how great Sheriff Donovan was! What did Matt ever do that was legendary, other than show up with really bad hair?
It was a bit of a sad write-off for the Matt Donovan character. Like, he was simply explained away as just no longer being there. No transfer to another district....no getting married again and touring Europe or anything like that. He's just...gone! For a guy who took such pride in protecting Mystic Falls from supernatural danger and for everything that he endured and lost in that town, I figured he deserved a better send off than that!
Anyway, it was actually a nice callback to Sheriff Liz, bringing a sense of TVD familiarity with this new Sheriff Mac. It's apparent that she will become Alaric's new love interest and I already feel sorry for her because that means she's going to die before she and Alaric find any kind of happiness! Seriously, Alaric should just become a monk or something because he dooms any woman that he falls in love with.
I suppose that the football game was just a vehicle to showcase Vardemus' philosophy in regard to supernatural beings interacting with the human world, but I was really hoping to see a glimpse into his new course where he's teaching students advanced attack magic. Nevertheless, I liked how he was drawing a line between his philosophy and that of Alaric's where Vardemus clearly sees how supernatural beings are...well....super! It's sort of like the whole Superman conundrum: why try to live life like a normal human when you clearly possess abilities that surpass human limits? With such abilities, shouldn't such beings be higher than humans? Are they not gods living among men? I could see that being the path that Vardemus takes with the school. What I didn't get was why they wrote it that Caroline herself was the one who interviewed and hired Vardemus? That seemed like such a random name-drop. I cannot see Caroline being that taken with a guy like Vardemus that she gave the stamp of approval for his being the headmaster, especially when he would be interacting with her daughters. Then again, she could be idiotic sometimes so maybe I can.
Of course, the ending was....interesting.
What the fuck was that? I will say that I'm intrigued as to what Vardemus is and what his overall plan is for the students of Salvatore School and his connection to Malivore. Did he devour that Shunka carcass? Why? Does he grow stronger by doing so? How much protein does Shunka meat have? I like that they left this mystery behind.
As for the Shunka itself, I was disappointed that we didn't learn more about it.
It actually kind of reminded me of the Zuul monsters from Ghostbusters:
Although it was clearly a plot device used to bring Rafael back (I mean....how convenient that a monster shows up all of a sudden that eats nothing but werewolves), I would have been interested in the backstory of this creature. As we learned on TO, the werewolves originated as a curse put upon a tribe of Indigenous people by Inadu (aka The Hollow). I could see other Indigenous tribes seeing these werewolves as being dangerous and either creating or conjuring up this creature as a means of protection. I wish they had somehow linked the backstory of this creature to The Originals just to give it a sense of lineage.
Speaking of werewolves....why did Hope have to get naked to turn into one? Since when is that how it works? At first, I thought she was taking her clothes off because she didn't want to rip those clothes she had on and was intending on getting back into them once she changed back into human form. But she took another pair of clothes with her and put those on when she changed back, so why go through the trouble of stripping before transforming? Not to mention the fact that she was in a hurry, so why spend any amount of time undressing? She might as well have had stripper music playing in the background at this point! I guess it was to make things awkward/funny between her and Landon but it felt unnecessary.
This is a scene that kind of made me laugh. First of all, how long did it take for the ambulance to get to the school? Keep in mind that the game occurred on a sunny afternoon when Ethan got his arm broken. When he got carried away on a stretcher, it looked like the dead of night! Fuck...how slow was that ambulance that it 3 hours to get there? And why take Ethan away in an ambulance for a broken arm in the first place? Clearly Alaric could have taken him to the hospital himself or his own mother could have done it since she was there. Otherwise, won't they get charged extra for the ambulance (I don't know how it works in the States but here in Canada, you get charged for riding an ambulance if you could have gone to the hospital yourself. And the charge is pretty hefty!).
And then his sister is coming out of the hospital and talking to Hope as though Ethan was undergoing open-heart surgery! Like, it doesn't take THAT long to put a cast on, does it? They really over-dramatized this whole part.
What I did like though was that they're delving into Josie's dark side. I'm glad she's fighting it because she should but I do hope she is tempted further into it by Vardemus. Given Lizzie's fragile mental state, I could see Vardemus turning both sisters into Twins of Evil, creating a lot of heartache for Alaric in the process.
Speaking of Lizzie, though I figured Sebastian was a vampire, I have to say I was intrigued that he's apparently a figment of Lizzie's imagination! Or is he? That's the mystery I guess. What I could do without is having MG hover around her like some little puppy looking for attention. The guy is pathetic! And on a side note....since when can vampires speed read? I know they're fast but they're not Superman or the Flash for crying out loud!
What's worse was when Lizzie had a moment of attraction towards MG.
No! No, no, no, no, no!!! While this is the storyline that I have the least interest in, I will say that they should write Lizzie as being more firm in her feelings. She should not be attracted to MG, no matter how good and nice and kind he is. If anything, those qualities should dissuade her because she sees that as him being weak. Her character is one that seemingly follows many a girl's character at that age.....they go for the asshole who treats them like crap because they mistake the asshole's arrogance for confidence! That's not conjecture or even believing a popular stereotype. That really happens! I could see her sleeping with him out of desperation or even pity and MG taking that as a sign that they're meant for each other, causing more pain for him at the end. But they should really keep Lizzie's feelings on the matter clear. Sure, let her be nice to MG but don't let her fall for him because he's being a nice guy. Let MG grow a pair and have the courage to walk away, knowing that there is someone else out there for him. They serve the audience better by getting that message across!
As for Hope, Landon and Josie, I think this episode should be the last where they're dragging this on. It's already getting old where Hope and Landon interact with each other and Landon having this "feeling" about who Hope is but he can't put his finger on it. I hope something gives in this and perhaps Josie's jealousy causes her to do something to Hope, essentially starting a war between the two.
Like I said, they left some good mysteries behind, some more intriguing than others. I'm hoping they can bring a good pay off to it all.

Riverdale - Dog Day Afternoon
Discussing Ep. 4.3
- "That place is crawling with dealers and fiends." Fiends? Who talks like this? I'm surprised he didn't say villains!
- How convenient. Mad Dog's little brother, who we've never seen or even heard of before, becomes the impetus for Archie to move on turning that boxing gym into a youth centre. Who is paying for all this, by the way?
- How dare you, Jughead? How dare you reference The Dead Poets Society....a film starring the late, great Robin Williams. A film that inspires and elicits emotion to the point that it's one of the few films that actually gets me choked up. It's up there in my top 5 all time great films. You sully the name of this great film by speaking it on this substandard show!
- Jughead brought a typewriter? Look, I'm all for old school technology.....but that's fucking asinine! And it's not even nice looking. It's like something from the 70's.
- What? Okay, so....WHAT A COINKIDINK! Jughead's roommate is none other than Moose. But he's no longer Moose. He's....Marmaduke? That's the name of a dog!
- "What about school, Archie?" I half expected Archie to respond "I don't go to school, mom. And yet I pass all my classes and am in line to graduate so, don't worry about it!"
- Are you fucking serious, Archie? What the fuck was that look you gave your mom when she showed concern about how much it will cost? HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU PLAN TO PAY FOR ANY OF THIS SHIT?!? IT'S A LEGITIMATE QUESTION!!!!
- Yes! Evelyn is back....I hope!
- Okay, I don't get the set design of this FBI agency at all.
They have rotary phones. ROTARY PHONES!!! No laptops. No computers. They have rotary phones and a Rolodex! Kids today have no idea how to work rotary phones. And dare I say, rotary phones don't work with current phone systems. How is this a top-notch FBI headquarters and they have no computers or any other modern technology but they have rotary phones?!? I didn't know the FBI budget was so low!
- Fuck you Cheryl and Toni. You DO NOT disparage Nana Rose! So what if she interrupted your make out session. You two make out every 2 hours!
- Shit! I forgot. Cheryl and Toni are taking care of Polly's twins. Why...again? How are they in any way shape or form qualified to do that? Who would leave infants in the care of these two empty-headed dimwits?
- Ya gotta love Nana Rose!
- Are you fucking serious?!? They are going to raise $40,000.....WITH A CAR WASH?!?
- Every suburban housewife is lining up thanks to half naked teenagers washing their cars. Somehow, I'd imagine that's insulting to suburban housewives. Then again, maybe I'm wrong.
- Plus, did they seriously end Reggie's storyline? That was it? He smashed his dad's car and had a heart-to-heart and suddenly years of abuse ends? Fuck this show!
- How is it that Ronnie is going to Harvard....running a successful nightclub....and yet she figured they could raise $40,000 with half naked teenagers washing cars in some backwater town in a day? A child thinks like that, not a teenager going to Harvard. She's an idiot!
- What the fuck happened to Edgar? I get that he's a cult leader and all of that but he suddenly went from Hippie Edgar to Cape Fear Edgar!
- You need $250,000, Edgar? Why not do a car wash?
- "I thought it was puerile. Tawdry waste of time. I mean...it's pulp. Not to mention, your prose reads like a pre-teen journal-ling about his abandonment issues than a coherent narrative." I'm sure that was a legit criticism of this show that they decided to insert into the dialogue.
- A night nurse Toni found online. I ask again....who would trust these two morons to take care of infant twins?
- Son of a diplomat? I'll give it to them....that's an interesting protection for Bret.
- So now Moose is bi. I'd wish they'd make up their minds.
- What incredible timing by Polly. How did she know where Betty even was?
- OH, FUCK OFF!!!
So with nothing but verbal instructions from Charles, scissors and a hair pin, Betty defuses a bomb! Fuck this show!
- Really, Ronnie? You can't come up with $250,000? You people seem to come up with copious amounts of money by doing absolutely nothing so why can't you come up with this amount?
- And thank you for proving my point with the eggs, Ronnie!
- And how did Betty get the school bus?
- Why this sudden shift in Edgar's personality? Why go from cult leader to surfer psychopath?
- NICE!!! Well done, Evelyn! Well done! Now hit Archie in the head with a beam and I'll love you forever!
- What the fuck? I was JUST beginning to have some respect for Bret as a villain while he was taunting Jughead. But when Jug goes all tough guy, Bret's face is nothing but fear! It's disappointing!
- "I own that jail. I come and go as I please." Then why go there at all?!?
- While I'm somewhat impressed that they're finally addressing how and why a Latino guy has the non-Latino name of Hiram Lodge, it's a tad bit late! They waited 4 seasons to do this?
- I'll say this, I'm glad that Hiram (or Jaime, whatever his real name is) is getting the upper hand on Veronica!
- Aaaaaaand Stupid Archie is back!
- I hope Dodger and his buddies beat the shit out of Archie! Maybe they'll beat the stupid out of him too!
- Of course. I forgot. Archie can beat 5 guys with nothing but a bat in his hand and come out of it with minimal scars. Because, he is....after all....
That sounds so stupid it's actually brilliant!
- This Cheryl storyline is completely and utterly pointless. It's just filler and not even good filler at that. And I think that look by Toni is actually the actress expressing disappointment and disgust at having to be a part of this crap!
- So when did Evelyn turn into a beatnik revolutionary?
- "Those bitches!" Ya gotta love Evelyn!
- I gotta say, even all beat up, Alice still looks hot!
- So now Betty's dressed like a beatnik revolutionary and so everybody listens to what she says. Never mind that they saw her get bonked in the head by Evelyn the night before. Never mind that she's wearing the clothes that Evelyn wore and Evelyn is nowhere to be seen!
- What the fuck is this?
So Edgar is Evel Knievel now?
- Why is Alice trying to stop Edgar? Just let him take off in his rocket that he built himself....see how far he gets! He'll most likely die anyway.
- So Weatherbee was part of the Farmies and he got his pinkie finger cut off? This makes no sense.
- What a fucking horrible way for Edgar to end! This was bullshit! I can't....I can't even....
- Veronica Luna. Oddly enough, that sounds fitting.
- Ya know what? FUCK YOU CHERYL!!!! FUCK YOU FOR KILLING THAT INNOCENT RAT WITH A BOOK! FUCK YOU STRAIGHT TO HELL! Where is PETA when you need them?
- A video cassette? Where the hell is Jughead going to find a VCR to play that thing?
What a horrible ending to the Farm storyline. Edgar deserved better than this. And yet, I'm not surprised at all. And what about Evelyn? I hope she sticks around somehow.
I'm beginning to realize that Riverdale is sort of like the TV version of Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin. It's just horrible. My only entertainment is making fun of it, so I guess that's something!

Evil - Rose 390
Discussing Ep. 1.4
Damn! This was an INTENSE episode! It's been a while since I've had to pause a show to get my bearings and this show made me do that! Fucking impressive.
So much to unpack here.
First off, my props to the actor who played Eric, the kid who was either possessed or just went crazy.
He played the role very well. His mannerisms, his dead eyes, his speech....they all played towards a character that you didn't know what was wrong with him. Was it psychological? Was is demonic possession? He teetered so well between both answers that it was really difficult to peg him either way. I loved that and I loved that David and his team didn't have the answers. The family had tried EVERYTHING and David and his team were their last hope, and even THEY couldn't figure it out.
I think my biggest gripe with this aspect of the show was how they labelled Eric as a newly-formed psychopath. With Kristen, who is a forensic psychologist, she should know the terminology better. From what I've heard and read from psychologists, a "psychopath" is not made, he/she is born. They are like that since birth. A "sociopath" is someone who becomes like a psychopath through years of trauma and other psychological factors. So the fact that they kept labelling Eric as a psychopath was incorrect.
Having said that, it was interesting how Kristen broached the subject of whether or not God could make someone a psychopath/sociopath. I wasn't a fan of David's answer as it seemed to shy away from a potential truth. And I say "potential" because I know people have various answers and opinions on the subject. My take on it is this: if God is sovereign over everything, then everything that occurs does so with His approval. Now, approval does not equal praise. How I view it is that there is a plan and everything that occurs, both good and bad, is a part of that plan. The Bible even states that God creates vessels of honour and dishonour (Rom 9:21). So as difficult as it is to swallow...yes, God may indeed create psychopaths/sociopaths for specific purposes. That is where our faith and trust is challenged in trying to understand WHY God does what He does.
Which leads me into my other issue, and that was when David told Eric that he need only ask of God and have faith when doing so, and God would grant whatever he asked for. I was seriously shaking my head at that. This is not Peter Pan! It does not work on faith, trust and pixie dust! So many people have had their faith challenged, if not lost, because they asked God for something specific and He didn't grant it, be it to save a loved one or prevent a tragedy from happening. I've experienced that as I know many others have as well. Those people had faith. They had trust. And God STILL didn't fulfil their requests. God is not a genie. And I suppose I should leave this discussion for my other blog that I will be developing soon but the fact is, it was misleading the way David proposed that "relationship," for lack of a better term, to Eric. And it seemed like they went about showing how wrong David was. It was interesting because I knew that all the good progress Eric was making, with him mowing the lawn and attending to his studies and praying at night....it was all leading up to a tragedy.
That near-tragedy is what made me take a pause. Him dumping his baby sister into the pool and just sitting there, watching her drown because he wanted to get rid of her was just jaw-dropping. I seriously thought they were going to have it that he killed her. Thankfully, David arrived in time and was able to save her. A bit convenient but there was, by no means, a happy ending for this family. I liked how the family went through every avenue and exhausted every option to try and save their son. But there was no saving him. At first, I was confused by the ending when the mom said that Eric had gone missing. But when she explained that she loved all her children but she had to make a choice and David surmised that they had killed Eric.....fuck! That was really unexpected. They did such an amazing job building it up that Eric was going to undergo an exorcism and that everything might have been alright. But that ending really hit you out of nowhere. Seeing Kristen break down in her kitchen, feeling empathetic towards that family as she wondered how difficult it was for them to kill their son in order to save their other two children while David prayed to God to forgive them....it was very emotional. And of course, the mystery remains: why did he change? Was it demonic possession? Was it environmental? Was it psychological? Now they will never know!
Then, of course, you have the other storyline, the fucking Shining 2.0! This is was a nice contrast with what was going on with Eric as this added the supernatural creepy element to the episode. I also liked how they incorporated the other sisters into the show. Though I still don't know all their names, it was cool to see the older sisters involved in the storyline. They sort of started where they left off, focusing on the youngest daughter, Mara. First off, I don't know why the older sisters thought it was a a good idea to let the younger sisters play that haunted game. Surely they knew that the little sister couldn't handle it! That was dumb. But then again, they let her watch that horror movie and so I suppose they figured she could handle this game.
I knew that Mara was going to see something unusual that the other sisters couldn't see, and sure enough she did. The monster in the game was not the same monster that she saw at the end when she was looking up at the stairs. I LOVED how they introduced this new monster...
...who looked similar to the monster in the game but he wasn't the same monster. He wasn't George either. But when she removed the VR and she could still see the red eyes fading away...
...that was eerie. Then you had the two older sisters playing with the VR and it automatically connected to the Internet where Rose390 suddenly joined them.
She was all kinds of creepy as well. The MINUTE they introduced the Ouija board in the game, I knew these girls were done. When they started chanting "hail, hail, hail...here he comes," it just sounded so haunting, like they were in a seance or Satanic ritual or something. You just don't mess with Ouija boards. I've heard people say that they don't mean anything and they're harmless and what not....I'm a believer and I think they are a gateway into something you don't want to mess with because you can't control it at all.
Where they really threw my expectations for a loop was when Rose390 invaded their VR and asked them if they knew where their father was. This is where the mystery develops like it did with Ben because how did this user know about their father? Granted, it could be an elite hacker that figured out who they are and somehow did his research...but that's so far fetched to the point of being impossible. While it was rather comforting that Rose390 said that their father was in heaven, nonetheless it now throws a wrench in my expectations that the husband may, in fact, return to screw up whatever romance is developing between Kristen and David. Because he could, in fact, be dead! They never did confirm that either way. They just had Kristen reassure the girls that she has been tweeting with him on a regular basis. But even the eldest daughter kind of threw doubt on that by asking if she still loved him and if he still loved her. Kristen's answer was hardly convincing, given the fact that she accepted David's offer, with a certain degree of gaiety on her part, to essentially go out on a date with him. So now the question is....is Kristen's husband still alive?
The other question is.....are Kristen's children in danger? I'm probably wrong but it would be amazing foreshadowing if they did to one of the girls what they did to Eric. Kristen breaking down at the end was emotional, not only because she perhaps felt a mother's empathy for what the family is going through (Eric's mother in particular), but also a potential fear about making the same kind of decision. There was no clear answer as to why Eric changed. And with this diabolical force preying on Kristen and her children, could Kristen be forced to make the same decision? Could any parent? How do you make that choice?
The episode was notable for Townsend not being there, which didn't take anything away from the quality of the episode. Having said that though, I think one criticism that I have of the show thus far is that they don't seem to be revisiting past mysteries that they left behind from previous episodes. They didn't revisit George. They still don't know who or what hacked into Ben's father's Alexa device and started talking to his sister in Punjabi. They never answered the mystery about the ghost in that video footage. They've mentioned nothing about David's dabbling with hallucinogenics. I really hope they go back and tie up at least some of these loose ends because it doesn't feel as satisfying leaving so many questions unanswered.
Beyond that, I loved this episode. My favourite one thus far!

Legacies - This Year Will Be Different
Discussing Ep. 2.2
- "Aren't you a little short for a janitor?" What kind of line was that? I didn't know janitors were known for their tall stature.
- Principal Saltzman! That's pretty damn quick if not convenient that he got the principal gig so quickly after losing the headmaster gig at Salvatore.
- Why is Josie walking around in just her bath robe?
- Wow!
"This is my semester of 'yes.' I'm available for literally anything!" That's something I'd expect to hear on Riverdale. I'm glad more guys in the school didn't hear that line!
- Yes. YES! YES!!!
Wesley Wyndam-Pryce! Well, that's not what he's called on this show but still.....WESLEY!!!! A fine casting choice with the great Buffy/Angel alumnus, Alexis Denisof!
- Oh shit, he knows magic! I like his style!
- Professor Vardemus. I swear, that's a Harry Potter rejected character!
- Neat! I wish I could write in the air like that!
- LOL! Well, if that wasn't a really awkward interaction between Lasie!
- Old Mill and Chill! That actually works.
- I love how Alexis, this American actor, is called upon to play these uptight British characters!
- Shit! That's a huge, fucking medal! It's bigger than Landon!
- It's good acting by Danielle. You could see she was on the verge of breaking down when Alaric is telling Hope that he's there to help. Whether she misses Alaric or she misses her family, there's pain there and it shows.
- Okay, maybe because I'm a guy and I don't get female relations....but is it at all common for random women to offer styling, makeup and revenge tips to other random women in the bathroom?
- Hope changed her clothes too? Why?
- Damn! Those are some sweet moves by Hope!
- LOL! I love Arrogant Alaric!
- LOL! Hope can be savage with the comebacks!
- I do wonder if it's because Landon is in a relationship with Josie or because he's a hero or both that that chick is hitting on him so hard and so blatantly!
- Ooooo!!! That was cold, Josie! Causing a nosebleed? And that look from Vardemus proves my point.
- How-in the world- could you miss-that target, Alaric?
- Sebastian is pretty damn charming. "It's good to meet you, Elizabeth." Then again, Lizzie is just exuding slut-vibes that I suppose anyone could be charming in her company!
- I knew Hulk's little meth-addicted brother wouldn't stay dead!
- "You're not recruiting her to your multi-level marketing company." I don't know why, but that line made me laugh!
- Damn, MG is going to get hurt big time. I think he should focus more on Kaleb's sister.
- That was a pretty good Superman punch by Hope!
- Cyclops! That's a twist.
- At least Lizzie didn't string MG around, knowing she didn't have an interest in him and giving him false hopes.
- Danielle's good. I'm feeling it for Hope right now.
- Ya know what....I loved that conversation between Lasie. They both laid it out on the table about how they felt and got everything cleared up. That's how relationships are supposed to work.
- Who the hell goes jogging at night in a graveyard? You're just asking to be killed!
A good episode. I have to say, I love how they've built up the relationship between Alaric and Hope. For two characters who had nothing to do with each other in either TVD or TO, they've written them very much like a master-student that works very well. I still say that Hope needs to reconnect with her family but at least she has Alaric.
They're also doing a good job by introducing these new elements of mystery. Who and what is Sebastian? He looked like some Shakespearean actor who stepped out of time. And why is he drawn to Lizzie?
Who is that cloaked figure? Is that Clarke? And what's he doing drawing the Malivore symbol everywhere?
What is Vardemus' overall plan? Why is he developing a group of magical students for offensive magic classes? I'm assuming this means that Alexis will at least make more appearances this season, which is awesome! He definitely looks like a character with not-so-benevolent ulterior motives.
Why are creatures coming back? Does Landon need to be sacrificed to Malivore to stop them? What creature will show up next?
All questions that will no doubt be answered in upcoming episode. Can't wait!

Thanks to a suggestion by Dman, I think I can incorporate the Disqus comment engine into Blogger. As Jenzy has pointed out, the Blogger comment engine allows only for a limited number of characters, which I didn't know. I don't know what the Disqus engine will allow but I'm assuming it will be unlimited like before. Plus, perhaps it will also allow pics and gifs and what not. Regardless, I think it will be a better commenting application.
So I will be installing Disqus next week. Current comments under the Blogger comment engine will disappear from view (although I will have them archived) so don't fret if you don't see your past comments under past discussion pages. Hopefully, those who had a Disqus account remember your username and password!

Riverdale - Fast Times At Riverdale High
Discussing Ep. 4.2
- I'm laughing while watching the "last time on Riverdale" montage.....I forgot about Betty's FBI brother!
- Sigh! So Archie is going to get his diploma only because his dad would have wanted it. That's not real motivation. And Mad Dog has missed....what....pretty much all of high school? Are you telling me he's going to be going into the same grade as Archie? And Archie is going into the same grade as everyone else? He's missed like a whole year!
- How in the world did Cheryl even dress Jason?!? He's got to be as stiff as a board at this point! HE CAN'T MOVE! It'd be next to impossible to move his limbs to get any clothes on him. And this would be the case just a few days after he died. He's been dead for 3 years. THREE!!! And he looks AMAZING for a dead guy! Man, I should only hope I look as good as that when I'm dead for 3 fucking years!
- Ya know, I even looked it up. Jason would be a skeleton at this point. Like seriously, the body apparently starts to liquify after a year! IT'S BEEN THREE YEARS!!! And consider the fact that his body was found IN A RIVER!!! At best, he should look like some bloated science experiment!
- These people have no class. None whatsoever. Yeah, let's just make out in front of our friends in their own fucking house! And then let's just fuck each other in their own fucking house!
- Synchronized Sex. This is pathetic. I'm fast forwarding.
- What?!? Weatherbee is gone? And he's been replaced by a guy named Principal Honey? Seriously? They couldn't give him a better name? Is this supposed to be a play on Weatherbee's name?
- "Now, get out of my sight." I like him already!
- The look on Reggie's face pretty much sums up my thoughts thus far!
- I miss The Farm. I miss Evelyn. She had style. I hope she returns.
- So the school calls Jug by his nickname, not his real name of Forsythe?
- Why—in the world—is this dude—who is offering Jug a position at Stonewall Prep—going to Jug's school and having him come to the principal's office—to make this offer? He couldn't give him a phone call? Send a letter in the mail? Visit him at home? No, he has to go to his school, interrupt his classes and make this offer in front of the new principal. Why?
- What the fuck was that?!? Paparazzi? Are you kidding me? Not enough people care about Veronica Lodge and her life in some backwater town to send 50 paparazzi to hound her at school and get 'the scoop' on her family. And no school would even allow such a thing! Talk about exaggeration!
- And I love how Archie and Ronnie were just walking down the hallway alone while all the other students were in class. I fail to see how Ronnie is going to Harvard when she doesn't attend any classes.
- Wait a minute. Don't you have to be voted Student Body President each year? The year just started. How is Cheryl the President of Student Body already?
- "There will be no back-to-school dance!" I really like this guy!
- And poor Toni. Does she even get any speaking roles or is she just relegated to being Cheryl's accessory again this year?
- Is that Reggie's dad? So we're finally going to meet the child beater! This should be interesting.
- Okay, what the fuck? Where was Reggie's dad FOR THE PAST 3 SEASONS?!? If he's this much of a psycho parent and so dementedly interested in Reggie's life, even in football, where has he been? Why have we not seen him? For all the stuff that Reggie did last year, you'd think this guy would have shown up to beat Reggie down to a pulp at some point. But we're only seeing him now, at a football practice no less. This is ridiculous!
- Was that a roll of film? Why is that guy using a camera that uses a roll of film? Why isn't he using his cell phone? And he couldn't take a photo of Ronnie when she was in the hallway or something? He had to attempt to take one in the girl's lockerroom while they were all showering and changing? And the most Ronnie did was ruin his roll of film? Why aren't they calling security on this guy?
- I've quickly come to realize that Riverdale is porn for girls! Half naked men's bodies...the sex scenes....it's light-porn for girls!
- Oh, for CRYING OUT LOUD!!! Mr. Chippy went to Jug's house! WHY DIDN'T HE DO THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE?!?
- Yeah, Charles....classified information....THAT YOU JUST LEAVE OUT IN THE OPEN FOR ANYONE TO SEE!!! Look up what "classified information" is supposed to mean, you idiot!
- Oh, for fuck's sakes! Where is Toni? Is she in Dracula's Castle? Why is she walking around with a candelabra? Is the power out? What am I watching right now?
- The fucking obligatory Cheryl-walking-down-the-middle-of-the-school-hallway-like-a-boss shot. Can't have a season without that, right? Fuck this show!
- "I'm the Queen Bee. You have no power over me." It's shit like that that makes me hate Cheryl and wants to see her put down!
- And apparently Jug is going to study at Wayne Manor!
- Bret Weston Wallace....could they come up with a more preppy name than that?
- Reggie flat out admitted that his dad beat him before. Why is this suddenly news to Ronnie? And why does she even care at this point?
- Reggie is showing up every other day now with some kind of black eye or injury from his dad beating him. But apparently Reggie's dad didn't touch him all of last year! What changed?
- And Stupid Archie is back! You don't go and threaten Reggie's dad, regardless how in the right you think you are! What happened to him trying to be like Fred?
- Oh fuck me, I can't....I just can't....
So Jug is so intelligent....so insightful....so wise that he stumped a bunch of prep school students in his first class? Fuck off!
- Oh, fuck you, Cheryl! Fuck you!
- Oh, you idiot, Betty! YOU IDIOT! You told Kev about your mom?
- AHA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! I really like Mr. Honey! Ruining Cheryl's party like that! Brilliant!
- So Stupid Archie is actually contagious. He's infected Reggie! Now Reggie is Stupid Reggie!
- And his dad's fancy car doesn't have an alarm? Right!
- Yeah, sure....why not? Betty and Jug just up and leave class without any word from the teacher! Is it any wonder why Riverdale High is such a crap school?
- And of course Riverdale is full of a bunch of unmotivated and intellectually deficient bums that it's easy for Jug and Betty to see the contrast between Riverdale and Stonewall. This is all new, by the way! It wasn't like this before!
- This better not be the end of Reggie's story. Trashing his dad's car and having a heart-to-heart DOES NOT end abuse in any reality whatsoever!
- What is this cabaret shit? When did they have time to rehearse any of this? And why is Cheryl and Toni a part of it?
- Seriously Cheryl? A bee hive? I REALLY hope they are going to write Mr. Honey proper and have him put Cheryl in her fucking place! I'm tired of these kids getting the upper hand on adults who have more resources and more experience than they do!
- So now Hippie Edgar has become Rambo!
- Whoa! Jelly Bean grew a lot, it seems!
- Is this how episodes are going to end....with a glimpse of the future?
This was....I don't know what to say! I don't think I've ever asked as many questions as I did in this episode about why anything is happening. It's clear that all logic and all reason and any semblance of reality went right out the window. They're not even trying anymore.
And the irony of it all is, in storyline they're harping on Riverdale students for being empty-headed and uninterested in dissecting great works of literature like Moby Dick, when THIS show does NOTHING to encourage real-world students to engage and use their brain to do the same. I'm not looking for Shakespeare here, but this show completely insults the intelligence of their audience by having completely unreal and ridiculous elements peppered throughout each episode. And yet there are some kids who look at this show like it's a great show. It's not!
Believe me, it's not!

Evil - 3 Stars
Discussing Ep. 1.3
I liked this episode. I thought it was a real improvement over first two, getting much creepier and blurring the lines between the rational and the supernatural while adding a mystery element to it all.
It was great how they introduced the six types of demonic possession. What makes them interesting, especially diabolical oppression (where you seem to be bombarded by tragedy after tragedy in quick succession) and diabolical obsession (exhibiting bizarre behaviour) is that these types of possession are far, far more difficult to prove. The irony of the first one is that people will chalk up such tragedies to a string of "bad luck," which is a no more scientific explanation than demonic possession! The second one is difficult to separate from psychological problems, which was a perfect set up for Kristen to show her stuff. I thought they did well by having her being able to label that Broadway producer, Byron Duke, as possessing narcissistic personality disorder, as well as her being able to give insight into popular leadership/self help programs such as the 53 Rules of Dominance. Also, they way they explained Duke sweating blood as being nothing more than his hair transplant getting infected and making him bleed was rather funny. What was also funny was how at the end, when everything seemed alright and Duke seemed like he was becoming a good guy, he gets a message that causes him to jump to his death! I thought that was both unexpected and brilliant!
Seems like these devices were the star of the episode. I NEVER liked these things! It's like the beginnings of Skynet or something. The fact that it's alleged that these devices are actually spying on their users, collecting information for the government or perhaps becoming sentient on their own is creepy enough. This episode upped the creepy factor with these devices by adding a paranormal element to them. Once again, they went the route of presenting what seems to be a supernatural occurrence to be explained away with non-supernatural explanation, only to have those non-supernatural explanations be insufficient in the end.
I loved how Ben went about exploring every possible option, from the hacker using the wi-fi to using the cellular signal and how he was able to affect even the temperature in the room via the cellular signal. Of course, what creeped Ben, his sister and me out was when another "hacker" is able to use his father's device and starts talking to his sister in, I'm assuming, Punjabi and talks about a baby. The mystery is set up there in regard to what baby he was talking about and who, or what, that "hacker" was. Because while the real hacker owned up to pranking Duke, there was no explanation for this. Of course, it could be an elite hacker using software that Ben and his sister have never heard of, but it seems like Ben and his sister are up on the latest technology so it's a real mystery who or what was talking to them. When the Alexa device started laughing, that freaked me out. I've heard of devices doing that and this show made me NOT want to buy one all the more!
The other mystery, of course, is in regard to David's dream and what that entails. First off, I want to address what that priest told him about demon's vulnerabilities being revealed in numbers and symbols. That's the first I've ever heard of such a thing and it sounded stupid. But the other line that really got me was when he said that "God draws in straight lines, while the devil draws in puzzles and anagrams." I had to agree with Townsend....that made no sense. One need only look to the parables of Jesus to realize that God does indeed use puzzles and non-direct language to reveal truths. The Bible is FULL of that. So I thought that was a really stupid thing for that priest to say because it completely flies in the face of what the Bible and other religious texts teach about God.
There was almost a DaVinci's Code feel to David trying to figure out his visions. It was a tad bit too easy though, having those Roman numerals on that tomb be latitude and longitude coordinates that David could superimpose on a map. That was a bit much. But I am interested in finding out what it all means and if it indeed is a message from God. The answers seemingly lie in Chicago, New York and Washington.
The spark between Kristen and David was downplayed a little, though it was a bit out of place when she asked how David could think of joining the Church amidst all the scandal and abuses at the hands of the Church. I liked his answer though, that the Church obviously needs good people to counteract all the bad that's been done in its name.
Speaking of Kristen, I think she gone and fucked up! So while I'm not a fan of how they're developing Townsend as essentially being the Devil himself, or at the very least a demonic personality, so blatantly....what's done is done and they might as well run with it now. And run with it they are! I did like Townsend's rationale for wanting that 14 year old kid in prison, claiming how it will corrupt him to the point where he becomes less innocent and more susceptible to becoming a monster, possibly a sociopath. That "second prison rape" line was chilling! And I loved how Kristen tried to record him talking but her recording got all fucked up in key places where Townsend talked.
Where I believe Kristen herself fucked up was in trying to play fire with fire with this guy. Creating a deepfake conversation and trying to pass it off as genuine....I think that's going to bite her in the ass in the future. I'm going to assume that a message this show is going to get across is that you cannot defeat the Devil with lies. Like the Bible says, the Devil is the father of lies. While Kristen may have won this one battle, she will lose the war by applying these kinds of tactics. She is in over her head and I kept shaking my head at the fact that she used a blatant deepfake as evidence. If they revisit this story in the next episode, I could see Townsend somehow revealing the recording as a deepfake, destroying Kristen's credibility and even casting doubt in David's mind about Kristen's morality, though it would be somewhat hypocritical if he judges her when he has his own secrets.
Overall, this was a great episode. I'm getting more involved in these characters and where this is all going to go!
Legacies - I'll Never Give Up Hope
Discussing Ep. 2.1
- I like the new logo without the colourful fireworks. This one works better!
- Aunt Bonnie! I hate how they tease TVD alumni!
- So Lizzie is hanging out with Caroline in Europe? Again, another tease.
- Alaric looks good with a beard. Looks more distinguished!
- This is really what has always gotten me about TVD universe vampires.....there's nothing 'vampire' about them other than their fangs and eyes and super powers. They get to walk around in the sunlight like normal people and it's off-putting. Seeing Kaleb and MG just hang around on a sunny afternoon, having BBQ is so not-vampire-like.
- I'm curious to know if there is any significance to having that "Jesus Saves" sign in the shot with MG and Kaleb.
- Why is Landon cooking the meat? Raf is a wolf....they don't need the meat to be cooked!
- Damn it, I was hoping it would be Klaus who rescued Hope.
- Clarke is coming off like some creepy dude at a club trying to pick up Hope! It's almost funny.
- I'm curious to know....if the world has completely forgotten Hope....then why has nothing in the world changed? We saw in Lizzie's alternate universe experience what happened when Hope never existed. So why is the world still the same?
- Oh, I really hope that with talk of the Ascendant, they will bring Kai back! That would be awesome!
- Josie is looking older for some reason. More so than any of the other characters, with the exception of maybe MG.
- "You talkin' to your meat?" That sounds really dirty if taken the wrong way! LOL!
- I'd be really curious to know what Landon is doing by re-killing himself a la Mafia style!
- I would be SO impressed if that vortex in Malivore was the same one that was sucking up people when the Other Side was collapsing. I know it isn't but that would be really cool if it was!
- Josie and Landon? Lasie? Jondon? Either way, it could work though it will really fuck things up with Hope!
- Ohhhh!!! "Solid second place!" That's cold shit right there!
- That's rubbish. Josie cheating at chess? Rubbish!
- LOL! Breaking the fourth wall! "You're a montage!"
- I'll give credit....those are some freaky looking monsters!
- I hope that's not the end of Clarke. He has potential to be a great villain.
- It's an interesting point Josie makes about a phoenix quota.....there is no telling how many times Landon can come back to life.
- FUCKIN' A!!!! Are they going to bring Kai back?!? I hope so! DAMN, I HOPE SO!!!
- Wow! So the memories of Hope don't come back with her return. This is going to be interesting.
- Awwww! I felt bad for Hope watching her watch Landon and Josie make out.
- Fucking hell....Hope SERIOUSLY needs to get in touch with Freya or Rebekah. Have a heart-to-heart about what's going on in her life. Have them walk her through this experience because she can't do it alone. Damn it....they need to bring back either Freya or Rebekah for this season!
- What the fuck is that monster supposed to be?!? He looks like the Hulk's meth-addicted little brother!
Normally, I would be upset at yet another Julie Plec love triangle. But this time, I'm not. This felt far, far more organic and plausible. Lasie seems to work despite them getting together in all of one episode, but they did it well. And in many ways, it seems almost like a love square...with Raf, Hope, Landon and Josie. They surprised me last season with the writing so I will trust they will handle this love square rather well.
Still, I am hoping for cameos from TVD/TO alumni. They can't go another season with these teases. They just can't. Bring in Freya. Bring in Kai. Bring in Caroline.
Bring in somebody, damn it!
Riverdale - In Memoriam
Discussing Ep. 4.1 - As per my usual routine, I'll comment on this episode as I go along. I'm sure it's going to be a sad one as it is the episode where they pay tribute to Luke Perry (Fred Andrews).
- It's amazing how something that gripped the town of Riverdale so completely is regarded as an "urban legend" only a couple of months later!
- Archie's hair seems unusually orange. Maybe it's the sunlight.
- Oh yeah, I forgot that Cheryl is crazy and entertaining her dead brother! He's actually looking pretty good for a 3 year old corpse!
- I'm going to have to remember Cheryl's attitude in this episode because it will no doubt change in the next episode where she's on everyone's side. That's the Cheryl Blossom way!
- I'm thinking that's actually an inside joke that Jug made about Archie surviving a bear attack.....because it's so fucking ridiculous that he did so with minimal damage! He is, after all....
- Yeah, Archie's hair is definitely looking different for some reason.
- Holy shit! An additional cost of $9,000?!? That's a complete funeral in and of itself....at least here in Canada!
- Reggie?!? So Reggie is back and he's all good with Ronnie and Archie together? The fuck?
- I'm sorry....I know this is supposed to be a special episode in tribute to Luke Perry.....but this is NOT how any of this is supposed to go. This scene right now of them all together, having a few beers and sharing stories of Fred Andrews should be stuff they're doing way AFTER the funeral! Having lost both my parents, I can tell you that you when the death of someone close hits you, you are completely and utterly numb to everything happening around you.....time slows down like nothing you've ever experienced before....a week feels like months.....and you're just going through the motions of getting everything ready because you can't process the loss. This scene looks like it should be something they're doing either at the reception or even at the wake.
I will point to Buffy once again, that episode where Buffy loses her mom. THAT episode exemplified what it was like to lose a parent. Dare I say, ironically enough....The Vampire Diaries got it right too! When Caroline loses her mom, Sheriff Liz, there is that scene where she's wandering through the house and it's all dark and quiet and she's ends up talking with Damon.....I'll give credit where credit is due and say that THAT scene caught that feeling of what it's like when you lose a parent. It's this sense of emptiness and silence that permeates everything around you because you can no longer feel a specific energy or life force that you've always experienced in your day-to-day. What they're doing now with this little get-together between all of them, I feel like they're trying too hard to make it all emotional.
- Are they going to make it that Archie becomes Stupid Archie again and does something stupid like try and hunt down his father's killer? Because that would just be stupid!
- Well, how fucking convenient that Reggie has a Hearst just lying around!
- AHA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!! Of all the things that they're going to use the "underage" card on, it's Archie transporting a dead body? With all the adult stuff these kids have gotten away with over the years, why do they even bother at this point?
- Shit! You could tell Mrs. Andrews went into 'Mom Mode' on that funeral director!
- I knew Shannon Doherty was going to make a cameo appearance. It's actually quite nice to see her, especially with everything going on in her life as well.
- Again, I hate harping on a scene like this but....seriously? Fred was boasting how great a son Archie was and how blessed he was to have a son like him to this random woman on the side of the road? They're trying too hard to make this all emotional and they don't have to!
- Wow! Cheryl changed her character in the span of one episode. She'll no doubt change in the next one.
- Actually, it's rather consistent that Archie is becoming Stupid Archie again. While I can understand him being angry and even wanting revenge, that's always been the case with Archie. He's doesn't run on logic, he runs on emotion.
- Fuck, ya know what....I'll applaud that!
- Fred would be ashamed of Archie. I don't know what the fuck Ronnie is talking about how Fred would understand. Fred would have lectured Archie's ear off about how stupid it was to try and beat up some random stranger out of a sense of revenge!
- Oh, for fuck's sakes!
Why can't they ever do anything low-key in Riverdale? Why do they have to have a parade? Look, I get it! He was a beloved character. And sure, Riverdale is a small town and everyone knows everyone but for crying out loud, they better have a parade like this for every other citizen that dies in that town!
- Okay, where are all these town's people for the funeral?!?
- Nana Blossom!
- I'm glad they acknowledged Betty's emotional turmoil since her dad recently died too. And they didn't throw a parade for him!
- Wait....Alice Cooper? Isn't she supposed to be missing? Isn't she supposed to be with The Farm being an undercover FBI agent? The fuck is this bullshit?
- Damn, it was hard watching that footage of Luke Perry.
Overall, I have to say that it was a typical Riverdale episode. I was hoping for something more but they had to go into the realm of the ridiculous as they always do. I also believe that this episode was a few months too late. I get why they couldn't do it back when Luke Perry actually died, for a variety of reasons, but the shock of his death wore off and, for me at least, the impact of this episode is not as strong as a result.
Regardless, it was a nice send off for the Fred Andrews character. Luke Perry will be missed, not only on this show but in the real world as well. Rest in Peace, Luke Perry!
